The Danger Of Decisionism

Many of you are probably wondering what Decisionism is and why I consider it to be dangerous? Let me begin by defining the term. We’ve all probably heard the terms Atheism, Humanism, Hedonism, and even Materialism over the years. Decisionism is best described as an instance when an unsaved person makes a public profession of faith (in Jesus Christ) by repeating a prayer and is then immediately identified as a new creature in Christ.

Most proponents of Decisionism use Romans 10, verses nine and ten to support the doctrine.

“…because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believers and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved…”

The reason Decisionism is so dangerous is that millions of individuals have repeated the “sinners prayer” verbally, but have not been regenerated or born-again. Jesus says, “The people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honereth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me.” (Matthew 15:8) This means that the inner work of the Holy Spirit on the human heart is responsible for re-creating the fallen human nature. A simple sentence or repeated phrase is not the determinate (for salvation) but a radical and complete transformation wrought in the soul by God.

The verse previously referenced, contains two important words that, if properly understood, would nullify Decisionism. The first being “confess” and the second “believe.” The word confess means to say the same thing, or to agree with someone. This agreement implies that the person making the profession has submitted their lives to His Lordship, and it also indicates that Christ now Master of ones being. Through repentance (of sin) and faith in Jesus Christ the result is a complete trust in Him for salvation.

This requires “belief” or “believe” in His claims as taught in Scripture regarding His identity

(Deity, Sinlessness, Virgin birth, etc.) as well as His work on Calvary (Crucifixion, Death, Resurrection, etc.).  According to Elmer Towns in his book titled, The Gospel of John: Believe and Live, he states, “In the Gospel of John, believing is the total response of the whole person to God as He has revealed Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ.” (Towns, pg.17) Regeneration occurs immediately and a new man is developed through the sanctification process.

In Chapter three of the gospel according to John, Jesus instructs Nicodemus on the regeneration process. The Lord indicates that new birth is not visible by the human eye, but is a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit. A person born of a women had no input regarding his/her conception. Similarly, an individual has no say in his/hers spiritual new-birth as well because it is a work of God.

“According as He hah chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world…Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself…” (Eph 1:4,5)

“Which were born, not of blood, nor the will of the flesh, nor the will of man but of God…” (John 1:13)

According to the MacArthur Study Bible, “Jesus point was that just as the wind cannot be controlled or understood by human beings, but its effects can be witnessed, so also is with the Holy Spirit. He cannot be controlled or understood, but the proof of His work is apparent. Where the Spirit works, there is undeniable and unmistakable evidence.” (MacArthur, pg. 1540)

Good fruit is confirmation that new birth has occurred. Pronouncing a person as saved at the altar moments after praying the “sinner’s prayer” gives many professing faith in Christ a false hope of security. What should transpire at the altar is a commitment to place that person under watch care. In other words, that person will be instructed in the ordinance of baptism and encouraged to join a discipleship group or class. Steadfast obedience to both and confirmation by the Holy Spirit (Roman 8:16) is initial evidence that a person is “born-again.”

“Then they that gladly received His word were baptized and the same day there added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued steadfast in the apostle’s doctrine and fellowship and in breaking of bread, and in prayers…” (Acts 2:41-42)

Following Jesus Will Cost You!

Beheading

If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet, because you are not of the world, but I chose you out o the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.” (John 15:18-20)

Is this verse a warning given to those who will become followers of Christ? The answer to that question is a definite–yes! Confirmation that you are a follower of Jesus Christ is that you are despised for His Name.

The God of the Bible is unique and separate from the plethora of false gods worshiped by the world.

Satan, who dominates the evil world system, is identified in scripture as the “prince of the air” and “god of this age” and it is he who instigates the hatred towards Jesus Christ, and His followers. The One True God, Yahweh or YHVH (tetragram) is the object of Lucifer’s abhorrence and detestation.

JEHOVAH is separate from all other false gods because His Name denotes the eternality, immutability, and uniqueness of His nature. He is also Judge and Lawgiver Who has hatred (Psalm 5:5), Enmity (Nahum 1:2), and Vengeance (Deut 7:9-10; 32:39-42) towards the sinner every day. These same attributes and identification of YHVH was applied by the Lord Jesus Christ to Himself in chapter eight of the gospel of John as confirmation of His deity. Therefore, hatred or rejection of One was in fact denunciation of Both.

“He who hates Me hates My Father also” (John 15:23)

Mere association with Jesus or the God of the Bible sparks anger and hostility towards (by the world) those who represent Him. Why is there such antagonism and resentment towards true believers or followers of Christ? Jesus tells us that because of His coming the world has no excuse for their sins and that He testifies that its deeds are evil. Christ followers who demonstrate intimacy, love, obedience and fruitfulness will invoke a similar response from the world. Men and women who reject Jesus Christ (as Savior) do so by choice, not out of ignorance.

Paul Washer writes in his book titled The Truth About Man, that “Man is not a victim, but a culprit. He cannot, because he will not. His corruption and enmity toward God are so great that he would rather suffer eternal perdition than acknowledge God to be God and submit to His Sovereignty. For this reason, moral inability may also be called willing hostility.” (Washer, pg. 55)

In his book, Washer uses the relationship between Joseph and his brothers (Genesis 37:4) as an illustration of moral inability. He writes, “Joseph’s brothers could not speak to him on friendly terms. It is not because they lacked the physical ability to speak, but because their hatred was so great toward him that they were unwilling to be friendly to him. In the same way, fallen man’s hostility toward God is so great he cannot bring himself to submit to God.” (Washer, pg. 56)

A similar example is revealed in the relationship or interaction between Jesus and Judas as recorded in the gospel of John. Judas having been selected by Christ to be His disciple was specifically chosen because God knew that he (Judas) would be the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.  “…and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled” (John 17:12) Judas loved the present world and would benefit monetarily by betraying or benefits, deliberately offering Jesus to him by the chief priest for thirty pieces of silver. Notwithstanding, Jesus offered to Judas (the same night) the opportunity to confess, plus, repent of his disloyalty and to become a recipient of His forgiveness. His final act of love towards Judas is demonstrated in the passing of ‘sop’ to Judas during the last supper. “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it…”(John 13:26) According to Jewish tradition, the host (Jesus) would designate the first morsel of food to the special guest as a way of symbolizing friendship. Similar to Joseph’s brothers, Judas was unwilling to turn from his (satanically inspired) plot against Jesus which would eventually lead to both his physical and eternal death.

Disdain towards Jesus and Joseph can best be attributed to the depraved nature of the human heart. “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murder…” (Matt 15:18) Men in rebellion against God abhor being confronted about their iniquities or transgressions. Jesus, having completed or accomplished the work the Father called Him to do would soon return to His original position glory. The responsibility of reaching the world with the “Good News” was delegated to His followers in the manner known as the Great Commission. “…I have given them Thy word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world…As Thou didst send Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.”

As servants of Christ, each believer will or should expect to experience similar circumstances to those endured by our Master during His earthly ministry. The ‘world’ (kosmos) refers to the created moral order in active rebellion against God and His followers. The Words of Christ, when spoken against the captives of this world system, bring opposition, hatred, suffering, and in some cases even death. Jesus clearly warns (verse above) all who believe in Him that they too will undergo persecution.

“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for yo to follow in His steps.” (I Pet 2:21)

D.A. Carson summarizes this point well in his book titled The Gospel According To JohnHe warns, “Those who preach Jesus’ gospel and live in progressive conformity to His own life and teaching will attract the same antagonism that He did.” (Carson, pg. 525)

Do the Words of Christ coincide with the mindset or approach to ministry by today’s church leaders? Stay tuned for part two of this message.

What does it really mean to bear fruit (in Evangelism)

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain…” (John 15:16)

This is not an article on predestination or election, even though I could use the words of Christ to support each, but rather a note about suffering. Those of us chosen of God were specifically selected by Jesus Christ our Lord to bear fruit that would last throughout eternity. A good tree will demonstrate spiritual fruit such as godly attitudes (Gal 5:22-23), righteous behavior (Phil 1:11), praise (Heb 13:15), and leading others to faith in Jesus Christ (Rom 1:13).

Since I am an evangelist and was ordained by God to share the gospel with lost people I would like to discuss a view of witnessing rarely mentioned in Christendom. We hear much about tens, hundreds, and even thousands of people professing faith in Jesus Christ every year as a result of outreach or evangelism events (Crusades, Blitzes, Church Services, etc). Baptism figures totaled at the end of the year by Church and Para-Church organizations are used to provide evidence that their outreach efforts were productive or successful.

Nevertheless, it is important that believers consider suffering punishment, imprisonment, rejection, hardships; etc for the gospel as a form of fruit bearing. As example that strongly supports this statement is revealed in the life of the Apostle Paul. Consider his calling as revealed in chapter nine of the book of Acts. This great evangelist was told (by Jesus) that he was not only a “chosen” instrument but would “suffer for My names sake.” Our Lord foreknew that Paul would experience beatings, stoning, shipwrecks, imprisonments, hardships, hunger, thirst, sleepless nights and the like for preaching the gospel to both Jews and Gentiles. Nevertheless, Paul and other messengers of God throughout both the Old/New Testaments as well as church history experienced similar circumstances.

John MacArthur in his book titled, Ashamed of the Gospel” writes, “…Jeremiah, for example, preached forty years without seeing any significant positive response. On the contrary, his countrymen threatened to kill him if he did not stop prophesying (Jer 11:19-23); his own family and friends plotted against him (12;6); he was not permitted to marry and so had to suffer agonizing loneliness (16:2); plots were devised to fill him secretly (18:20-23); he was beaten and put in stocks (20:1-2); he was spied on by friends who sought revenge (v.10); he was consumed with sorrow and shame eve cursing the day he was born (vv. 14-18); and finally, falsely accused of being a traitor to the nation (37:13-14), Jeremiah was beaten, thrown into a dungeon, and starved many days (vv.15-21).” (MacArthur, 88)

John Fox records in his book Fox’s Book of Martyrs the testimonies of hundreds of men and women who throughout church history suffered to the point of death for evangelizing the world. This would include Stephen, the Apostles, Christians under Nero, Domitian, Trajan, Christians in living Persia, France, Calabria, Bohemia, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, China, Japan, Spanish America, Great Britain, Ireland, Scotland, United States, India, West Indies, Inquisitions under the Papacy, etc. Men like John Wickliffe, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Charles Surgeon and the like all suffered some form of persecution for their faith and for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Would emulating the sufferings of Christ be considered bearing fruit in the eyes of God?

Scripture records that before the Bema Judgment seat of Christ, believes are rewarded for their fruitfulness. The Bible mentions at least five rewards and two of them pertain to leading people to Christ known as the ‘Crown of Rejoicing’ mentioned in Proverbs 11:30; Dan 12; and I Thessalonians 2:19-20. The ‘Crown of Life’ is given to those who successfully endure trials, persecution, or suffering (for His name) is mention in James 1:2-3 and Rev 2:10.

Even though the current climate in our culture or world opposes the teachings of Christ, believers must (like their predecessors) be bold, plus steadfast in the proclamation of the gospel. Even if it means consequences that would cause Christians to suffer some form of ridicule, rejection, or negative repercussions for His name sake.  Not only is there a reward in eternity for this sort of fruit bearing, but also an opportunity to produce fruit in this present life. Remember, God called you out of the darkness and into His marvelous light in order to produce fruit that will remain!

Test the Spirits II

The Masquerader

The Masquerader

Why test the spirits?  Because Satan masquerades as an angel of light and specializes in deception. Lucifer understands that the war for the souls of mankind or human beings begins in the mind. Therefore, he diligently works to create avenues to promote teachings, philosophies, doctrines, religions, etc. that contradict God’s Word. Reading a book, listening to the radio, viewing television and movies, formal academic studies, casual conversations, theological teachings and more are all various methods used by God, Man, and Satan to influence thought patterns. The Apostle Paul writing in his second letter to the church in Corinth addresses the concept that principalities and powers war for the minds or thoughts of men.

Paul begins chapter ten by addressing the (false) accusations that he walked in the flesh or had some type of moral flaw in his character.  The term “flesh” is used by his opponents to refer to man’s creaturely weakness which is prone to sinful passions. Paul refutes his antagonists who were making this accusation by admitting that he was a mere human being of flesh and bone, but shunned the allegation that he was dominated by sin. Paul lived, and walked, in the Spirit. Evidence of this fact is that he waged war against Satan with the supernatural artillery supplied by God.

Paul understood that the battle is for the minds and souls of both believers and non-believers. Worldly weapons such as guns, knives, philosophies, arguments, eloquence, propaganda, organizations, etc. are powerless against principalities and against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. These principalities (Satan and demons) have ensnared men, placing them in bondage to sin. This is what is meant by strongholds. He uses this word as a metaphor to put forth an imagery of a fortress. People could take refuge behind the walls of a city when attacked because they were solid, high, and impenetrable. Satan and demons develop these strongholds through the use worldly or demonic philosophies, religions, propaganda, arguments and organizations, in order to entrap or ensnare the mind.

An anonymous author wrote:  “The mind is the taproot of the soul”

I once again met with the two Saudi Arabian students, and one of their friends in order to discuss the topic of science as presented in the Bible and the Quran. According to these Muslim men, Mohammad had supernatural revelation given to him by Allah which revealed such ‘science’ as pre-born humans in the womb as “clots” and “sperm” being stored in the backs of men. These are both addressed in the Quran:

“So let the man look to what he was created from. He was created from gushing water. It comes out from backbones (of the male) and breast (of the female). (Surah 86:5-7)

“The We made the nutfah (male and female sexual discharges) a clot of blood, the We made the clotted blood into a piece of flesh, the We clothed the bones with flesh, then We made it another creature. Blessed therefore be God, the most excellent of Creators.” (Surah 23:14)

Modern science proves that each of Muhammad’s above mentioned attempts to explain the reproduction process is incorrect. Yet, these men view these inconsistencies as proof that Muhammad received this revelation directly from Allah. The Bible’s claims of supernatural elements can in fact be supported by empirical science (reproducible). According to Dr. Harold Wilmington in his book titled Willmington’s Guide to Complete Bible Knowledge “It claims far more specific scientific statements than one might realize.”

  • The fact that the earth is spherical (Isa 40:22)
  • The fact that the earth is suspended in space (Job 26:7)
  • The fact that the stars are innumerable (Gen 13:16; 15:5)
  • The fact that there are mountains and canyons in the sea (Jon 2:6)
  • The fact that there are springs and fountains in the sea 9gen 7:11;8:2; Prov 8:28)
  • The fact that there are water paths (ocean currents) in the sea (Psalms 8:8)
  • The fact of the invisible atom structure of matter (Col 1:17)
  • The fact that all living things are reproduced after their own kind (Gen 1:21;6:19)
  • The facts involved concerning the human bloodstream (Lev 17:11)
  • The fact involved in the two laws of thermodynamics (Gen 2:1-3; PSA 33:6-9;102:25) Second law (Psa 102:26; Rom 8:18-23)

I presented this evidence to these men regarding the Bible’s accuracy in order to disprove the lie that the Bible is corrupt. Only the One True God, who made the heavens and the earth, could reveal these scientific supported truths to the various writers in both the Old and New Testaments. Many other Biblical concepts were presented or addressed (Grace, Hell, Jesus the Creator, Sin, etc)

The concept that consumed the most time of discussion was the idea of love. The Quran does not mention love other than the fact that Allah does not love the infidel (unbeliever).  This is found in Surah 30:45. Nowhere in the Quran does Allah demonstrate or express his love for the Muslim. Allah is unapproachable as well as unknowable. However, God’s love for mankind is demonstrated from Genesis to Revelation in the scriptures. His greatest gift or expression of His love is found in the writings of the Apostle John.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life…He who believes in the Son has eternal life…” (3:16,36)

“By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world…IN this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (I John 4:9,10)

Paul writing to a young pastor warns him that people sitting in the church will be led away from truth by deceitful spirits promoting doctrines of demons. (I Tim 4:1) Apostasy will escalate as the church age draws to a close and the coming of Christ draws near. Demonic influence will reach its peak during the tribulation period under the dominion of the anti-Christ.  Demonically inspired teaching will lead people away from their original position in the Christian faith. (Unbelievers) Satan uses deception to make people believe that they are saved; on their way to heaven; have a relationship with God; doing the will of God; serving God; Good enough to please God, etc. The only way to expose his lies is to wage war with the truth of God’s Word!

How to witness to a Witness (Jehovah)

Background:

Most people in America have encountered people from the Watchtower organization who claim to represent Jehovah, God. The origin of Watchtower doctrine did not originate from the Bible but from Charles Taze Russell, its founder.  It was in 1879, while reading scripture that Smith formulated an unbiblical opinion regarding Hell, the Trinity,  and the Deity and Personhood of Christ. He began promoting his teachings world-wide by publishing the Watchtower Magazine.  In addition, Smith produced a series of commentaries (to the Bible) called Reason from the Scriptures and these are used by Jehovah Witness to interpret scripture.

Approaching the Jehovah’s Witness

An effective approach to Witnessing to Russellites is to begin the conversation with the history of false predictions by its founders.  Russell , Rutherford, and Knorr have made futuristic predictions that were proven false over time. For example, Charles Taze Russell predicted  at least twice (in 1874 and 1914)  that Jesus would return to the earth in those years. This didn’t occur resulting in a new claim by Russell that He came spiritually and established His theocracy or rulership.

Following his pattern of prognostication, Joseph Franklin Rutherford predicted the return of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to earth between 1925-1929. To prepare for their arrival, a home was built in San Diego, California to house them. However, when his prophecy failed to occur as predicted, Rutherford lived in the home until his death in 1942. Not to be outdone, Nathan H. Knorr became President of the Watchtower Tract Organization  and envisioned Armageddon occurring in 1975. Obviously, he too spoke presumptuously and was proven to be a false prophet.

Dealing with False Prophets

According to scriptures found in Chapters 13 and 18 of the book Deuteronomy, false prophets were to be put to death for speaking presumptuously and leading God’s people astray. “If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you saying, ‘ Let us go after other god’—which you have not known and let us serve them, you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams…but that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken in order to turn you away from the Lord your God…” (Deuteronomy 13:1-3,5) Evidence that a prophet has heard from God is that his words or prophecies are 100% accurate, and in each of these cases the opposite is true. “How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?—when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken…” (Deuteronomy 18:21-22)

The purpose for discrediting the founders of the Watchtower organization is to prove that their writings, statements, conclusions, and the like cannot be trusted or believed.  Jehovah Witnesses will primarily refer to the Reasoning from the Scriptures to interpret or understand the Bible. It is best to suggest that all extra biblical sources be restricted from use because of its lack of creditability.

When Did Jehovah Die?

The best way I have discovered through trial and error to refute their claims regarding the Deity, Resurrection, Visible Return, Trinity, Angelical, Creation of Jesus is to point out that Jehovah said “I was dead and behold I am alive…” (Revelation 1:18) To help illustrate that Jesus is in fact Jehovah-God, have them read Revelation 1:8, 21:5-7, and 22:13. Each time after they read the verse from their New World Translation, politely ask them the question “Who is the Bible referring too?” Their response will be Jehovah. Once you have established the point that the Alpha and Omega, First and the Last, and the Beginning and the End is Jehovah, ask one final question. Verse 17-18 of chapter one of Revelation refers to the death of Jehovah. Ask them,  “When did  Jehovah or God die?” and wait for their response. They will either respond with shock or anger that Jesus cannot be Jehovah.

From this point on it is up to God to remove the blinders from their eyes and lead them to repentance of their blasphemies.  “And the Lord’s bond servant must not be quarrelsome…with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.” (2 Tim 2:24-25)

In my most recent encounter with 2 JW’s I did all of the above  in order to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with these souls.  In my case, they both yelled that Jehovah didn’t die and immediately left the restaurant!

To God Be the Glory!

Through Much Tribulation

e4l5Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in chapter twenty-one of Luke’s gospel presents many warnings regarding the state of the world prior to His return to the earth. Not only are wars, plagues, famines, terrors, and false prophets spoken of, but He informs us that the religious persecution of Christians will be common. He states, “But before all these things they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you delivering you to the synagogues and prisons bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake.” (Luke 21:12) Notice that He refers to believers being delivered to “synagogues” or taken captive by the devout or pious leaders in order to stand trial for their faith in Christ.

Soul Liberty is defined in a book written by Henry C. Fish titled “The Price of Soul-Liberty and Who Paid It” as the liberty to think and act in religious matters without human dictation or control. God has given men freedoms and liberties to choose and live according to his/her dictates. Scripture is the guideline given to believers to assist in discerning good and evil in relation to decision making pertaining to the will of God.  True believers will not or at least are hesitant to violate not only their conscience, but more importantly the Word of God while making assessments. Biblical convictions will most certainly cause conflicts in the world, but surprisingly, Jesus warns us struggles will also occur within the church. This is clearly demonstrated by the skirmish in the fourth century over Sacramental Efficacy. The Baptist opposed the idea of “clinic or sick-room baptism” as well as baptizing unconscious children in order that they might be saved. In response to this (unbiblical) soteriological view, the Baptist protested and were denounced by the Roman Empire.

According to Fish, they were persecuted by religious leaders as a result of holding their views. “In the following year, the council of Carthage, of which Augustine was the President, thus decreed: “We will that whosoever denies that little children, by baptism, are freed from perdition and eternally saved, that they be accursed…Thus early did Baptists begin to pay the price of Soul Liberty…And ever suffering for their faith, is it strange that they should have been first and foremost in denouncing religious tyranny, and proclaiming the sanctity of conscience?” True believers can expect similar responses from world governments and religious leaders comprising the twenty-first century false church. Especially, in relation to topics pertaining to marriage; false religions; homosexuality; the deity of Christ; the inerrancy of Scripture; biblical roles; government policies;  and soteriology.

A quick assessment of viewpoints, laws, and regulations recently implemented regarding those who oppose such hot topics as same sex ‘marriage’, public schools, abortion, homosexuality, Islam, and governmental policies  proves the truth of Jesus’ aforementioned predictions.  As a result of this increasingly more hostile environment, Believers have and will spend more time before judges and courts answering for our faith and convictions.  One example of secular opposition is the recent discovery of the illegal activities within the Internal Revenue Service.  Reports have been uncovered that expose the practice of opposing or denying certain non-profit organization’s request for 501c 4 status in order to block political influence.   Nevertheless, we see similar antagonism developing amongst religious leaders towards the concept of the God of the Bible being exclusive. Jesus states, “Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teachings of Christ does not have God…” (2 John 9)  Many multi-faith or ecumenical leaders are attempting to unify world religious by laying aside doctrine in order to come together for the sake of a humanitarian effort.

In an article titled, Is Pope Francis Laying The Ground Work For A One World Religion the author writes, “Does Pope Francis intend to help the global elite achieve their goal of uniting all of the religions of the world under a single banner? Will he be instrumental in establishing a single global religion for the glorious “new age” that the global elite believe is coming? After he was elected, the cover of Time Magazine declared Pope Francis to be the “New World Pope“, and since his election Pope Francis has made it abundantly clear that he is going to make ecumenical outreach a top priority. He has spoken of his “determination to continue on the path of ecumenical dialogue“, and he has already held a number of very high profile ecumenical meetings. Not only has he worked hard to reach out to leaders from various Christian traditions, he has also made it a point to try to acknowledge the mutual bonds that he feels with all other religions. For example, in one recent address he made it a point to say that he believes that Muslims worship and pray to the “one God” that he also worships.

This “all roads lead to the same God” philosophy is a hallmark of the one world religion that the global elite have been slowly building toward for decades. The global elite know that even with a one world economy and a one world government, humanity will never be truly united until there is a single global religion. Unfortunately, this one world religion that they are seeking to establish is diametrically opposed to the Christianity that we find in the Bible. By throwing out Biblical truth for the sake of “friendship between men and women of different religious traditions“, is Pope Francis fundamentally betraying the faith that he claims to represent?

Christian persecutions

The biggest similarity between Islam and Catholicism is that both religions have a long history of persecuting and murdering Christians. Foxe’s Book of Martyrs written by John Foxe records not only the labeling of Christians as apostates but numerous murders occurring because of believer’s opposition to idols and satanic rituals practices by the papacy. Again, we are warned by Christ about the practices of religious leaders, “They will make you outcast from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God…” (John 15:2) So, how should believers respond? “It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony…for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.” (Luke 21:13, 15)

Jesus’ solution to this problem is to witness, testify, or preach the gospel to our persecutors!

Only through hearing the “Good News” can men be saved. Therefore, Christians must not only be ready to preach the gospel but be ready to suffer for their faith. We are reminded in the book of Acts that through much tribulation, suffering, persecution, distress, rejection, we are to enter the kingdom of God. “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.” (Acts 14:22b)

Psalm 5:3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. Psalm 6:9 The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer.

Week 2  5/26-6/1/13    Pray for revelations about the Word of God and the work.  Answers may come as you pray just as Gabriel came to Daniel.

Daniel 9:20-22   20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God; 21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.

Week 3  6/2-6/8/13    Intercede for the Lost in the NW Ohio area.  Faithful saints of God have committed to door-to-door and street evangelism in the area.  Please pray for hearts to be changed and that God will draw them to Himself.

In the book, A Passion for Prayer,  author Tom Elliff  points that Genesis 18 is a clear example of a believer interceding for another.  If you will recall this is when The LORD and His angels visited Abraham and revealed to him that He was going to destroy Sodom.  The Bible records that, “the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD.” (v. 22)

When Abraham heard that Sodom and Gomorrah was to be destroyed because of  ‘their sin is very grave’ (v. 20) he stood before the LORD and began to intercede for the welfare of his relative Lot and his family.  Through persistence in prayer for the people, Abraham received assurance from the LORD that He would not destroy the land for the sake of ten righteous people. (v.32)  As we know the land and inhabitants was destroyed but Lot and his family was delivered.   Pray this week for the Lost. “Intercession requires aggressive cooperation with God along the lines of His revealed will” and it involves “Imploring God on behalf of a specific person or persons.” (Elliff, pg. 20)

Luke 11:5-9

5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;

6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?

7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.

8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you

Week 4  6/9-6/15/13   Pray that the LORD of the Harvest would send forth laborers into the field.  Pray that He would open doors for ministry to Evangelize4Life workers and give us increased opportunities to equip, train and encourage those with a heart and call to do evangelism.

Ephesians 4: 11-13

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Week 5  6/16-6/23/2013  God Is Always Working…

Please pray that true believers will assist in sharing the gospel and in discipling both unbelievers as well as new converts.  The Bible reveals that God is always working.   God the Father ministered or labored through His Son while on earth and now operates through Spirit filled Christians to reach the lost, plus (disciple) new believers.

My Father is working until now and I Myself am working…As Thou didst send Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world…”  (John 5:17, 17:18)

Week 6 6/24-7/1/2013  Weary Of Well Doing

Evangelism for some can or could be very discouraging especially if individuals are looking for immediate results.  The proper perspective must be directed towards God and His supernatural work in the lives of unbelievers.  The sower of the gospel is but a vessel used by the Lord to  scatter the seed, but ultimately God gives the increase.

“So then neither the  one who plants nor the one who waters is anything but God who causes the growth.”  (Corinthians 3:7)

Weeks 7-11 7/1-7/29/2013   Praying for Missionaries & Evangelists and their Personal Devotion Time

Pray for time of personal devotion.  As Christians we need to spend time in the Word of God and with our LORD every day.  Pray for our brothers and sisters who are on the front lines and on the field that you would give them the heart, desire and time to prioritize their time in personal devotions.  Pray that the Lord would give them quiet time each day when they can meditate and be strengthened.

Week 12  7/29-8/3/2013  Praying for the families of Missionaries & Evangelists.

Often times, missionaries and evangelists are required for the sake of the call to leave their families for periods of time to be on mission.  Please pray and ask God to provide for their families while they are absent.  Pray also that these men and women will easily adjust to their surroundings while they are away from their homes.    Mathew 28.

Week 13  8/4-8/10/13  Pray for the children and families of those who are ministering to the Body of Christ and for the Missionaries/Evangelists who are preaching the gospel to men, women, boys and girls on the field.   The enemy knows that attacking the missionary/pastor’s family is an effective way of distracting or interfering with the work.

Job 1:10, 1 Peter 4:8, 1 Peter 4:11, Psalm 103:5

1 Peter 4:8

King James Version (KJV)

8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

1 Peter 4:11

King James Version (KJV)

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Your Help is Critical to the Work of Evangelize4Life

We would like to thank everyone who has been praying for the ministry.  Your prayers are availing much and the gospel is being shared consistently and with power in the NW Ohio community:  All glory to God!  In addition, we are inviting  you all to sign up for our Pentecost to Passion year of prayer.  We are looking for prayer partners as this is a call that requires serious prayer!  Please sign up now here.

We have had to cancel a few of the outreach dates due to Steven’s recent car accident.  As a result of the collision, we are without a vehicle and Steven is recovering from a severely sprained ankle.  Please pray for his quick recovery and that he will be back to the work of street witnessing and  missions as soon as possible.

Thanks again to all of our ministry friends who have been moved to support the work financially in March.  We are hoping to be able to produce a newsletter outlining our events and trainings, etc. very soon.

Our current ministry needs  include a vehicle, a video camera ( we have an intern scheduled to begin this summer to help us with our visual communications), financial support, and always more tracts and Bibles.   Our intern will help us document some of the work so that you can better see how we are working to impact our community and the world with the gospel and by doing the work of evangelism.

Steven, Jared and Kevin have continued to attend open meetings engaging the community doing the work of Apologetics and Evangelism.    A special thanks to other friends who have given their time, energy and funds to work alongside us during March and April.  In addition, they are involved in discipleship and Bible studies with new believers and with those seeking the Truth.

Finally, please consider how you might join us in the work of evangelism. Here are some suggestions…just in case you can’t think  of anything:)

Join our prayer team.  Prayer is our number 1 ministry need.  Romans 15:29-31 (KJV)

29 And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.

30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ‘s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;

31 That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;

Consider Supporting the ministry financially.  Evangelize4Life was created for the purpose of doing evangelism, establishing biblical church plants and training believers to engage in biblical Apologetics in order to fulfill the Great Commission of our Lord, Jesus.  This work requires many hours of study, prayer and lots of commitment.  We do this because God has ordained that we do it.  We love Him and we seek to obey His commands.  Although we are a non-profit organization, we still need financial support in order to accomplish the work effectively.  Won’t you consider being a partner together with us?  Everybody can be a part of the evangelism call.  You can go, you can send or you can do both!  Send us; we’ll go.

Tell others about the ministry.  We are hoping to be used by the Lord to reach many people.  We do this in a number of ways.  Some of these include: Preaching for churches for the purpose of exhorting their members to get involved in evangelism; Teaching seminars, conferences and webinars that equip and train believers to do the work of an informed and prepared evangelist; and our daily podcast, Evangelize4Life with Steven Glover.   Listen in live on weekdays at 6:30pm  eastern standard time or anytime by downloading the page.

‘Like’ our facebook page,  follow our blog and twitter feeds and join our LinkedIn group.  We admit we are not the most socially savvy but we do recognize that these are effective ways to get information to you all quickly.  You can sign up for our Daily Catch online news page from right here.  This is a ‘paper’ designed to inform you on what’s going on in the world so that you have what you need to stay relevant when engaging in the marketplace and during your witnessing encounters.  Worldview is a great conversation starting point!

Let me begin by first putting to rest the myth that door- to-door evangelism doesn’t work! If that were true then God would not have given us the command to “Go” into the entire world and preach the gospel (Matthew 10:7; 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; Luke 9:2, 60; Acts 5:20; 2 Tim 4:2). Our responsibility is to obey our Lord’s instructions leaving the end results up to the Lord. If the objective is to see immediate mass numbers of conversions, baptisms, and increased church attendance, then I would agree that it is not effective.  In reality, most bible- based outreaches do not produce results like the one we read about  at Pentecost in chapter two of the book of Acts. However, an unbiased evaluation of scripture will lead any objective reader to conclude that preaching or teaching the gospel to lost people is the message emphasized or communicated in the Bible.

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” (Romans 10:14-15)

These rhetorical questions asked by the apostle Paul stress the importance of believers communicating the gospel to lost people wherever a witness is needed. A clear presentation of the gospel must occur in order for unbelievers to believe in the One True God. Darrell W. Robinson writes in his book titled Total Church Life

“Each church has adequate personnel to evangelize its community. The personnel are those in the pews every Sunday. You in Acts 1:8 is plural. Jesus is speaking to the entire membership of the church. His call to every Christian is to witness. There is no choice. We have no option. Every Christian is to witness for Jesus. The only choice is to obey or disobey. A Christian may be a disobedient witness or an obedient witness. His witness may be negative or positive, but he is a witness.”

How does the church accomplish this task in a time or epoch when scripture describes men and women rejecting the truth in the last days? Believers must continue to obey the command or instructions given to them by our Commander and Chief, Jesus Christ. That is “Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” (Luke 14:23) Jesus began His ministry by commissioning and assembling men to “Go” where the lost people were! “Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come” (Luke 10:1) and to reach them with His gospel. “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). After His ascension into heaven, His apostles, empowered by and filled with the Holy Spirit, carried the “Good News” to the surrounding cities as well as to the world.

“Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men, from every nation under heaven…Now when they heard this they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren what shall we do?” (Acts 2:5, 36)

  • “And every day in the temple and from house to house they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” (Acts 5:42)

  • • “…And it became known all over Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.” (Acts 9:42)

  • • “And they said, “Cornelius a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man well-spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, was divinely directed a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear a message from you…and he shall speak words to you by which you will be saved, you and all your household…” (Acts 10:22; 11:14)

  • • “…So then those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose…to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews alone…But thee were some of them men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks also preaching the Lord Jesus…” (Acts 11:19-20

  • • …Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul…And when they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews…And when they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos…Then the proconsul believed when he saw what had happended, being amazed at the teaching of the Lord” (Acts 13:2, 4-5, 12)

  • • “…But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch…And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to our fathers…And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region…” (Acts 13:32, 48)

  • • “…And it came about that in Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a great multitude believed both of Jews and of Greeks.” (Acts 14:1)

  • • “…they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra, and Derbe, and the surrounding region; and there they continued to preach the gospel.” (Acts 14:6-7)

  • • “…And the next day he went away with Barnabas to Derbe. And after they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch…” (Acts 14:20-21)

  • • “…And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia…” (Acts 14:25)

  • • “And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them…to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia…” (Acts 16:10, 12)

  • • “…they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. And according to Pauls custom, he went to them and reasoned with them from the Scriptures…” (Acts 17:2)

  • • “…And the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea…for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily…”(Acts 17:10-11)

  • • “…Now those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens;…So he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present.” (Acts 17:15,17)

  • • “…After these things he left Athens and went to Corinth…And he was reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks…” (Acts 18:1,4)

  • • “…And they came to Ephesus and he left them there. Now he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jew…So the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing…” (Acts 18:19, 19:20)

  • • “…how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable and teaching you publicly and from house to house.” (Acts 20:20)

  • • “…Brethren and fathers, hear my defense…And they listened to him up to this statement…” (Acts 22:1,22)

  • • “…And Paul looking intently at the Council…And as he said this there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees…” (Acts 23:1, 7)

  • • “…And Agrippa said to Paul, You are permitted to speak for yourself. Then Paul stretched out his hand and proceeded to make his defense…but I utter words of sober truth…” (Acts 26:1, 25)

  • • “…and thus we came to Rome…And he stayed two full years…preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.” (Acts 28:14, 30-31)

The cities mentioned throughout the book of Acts are a reflection of God’s purposeful objective of reaching all people groups, nations, and tongues. Those who heard and believed the gospel were not only saved but added to new church plants in Jerusalem, Philippi, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Thessalonica, etc. The disciples of Christ were adamant about the gospel reaching the world and were willing to endure hardships (stoning, imprisonment, beatings, death, being shipwrecked, persecutions, ostracism, prosecutions, and more) so that the name of Jesus Christ might be heard. Not only must there be a willingness to preach the “Good News” to strangers but the message must be truthful and direct.

The goal is not to add notches to an evangelism belt or members to the church roll but to allow the Holy Spirit convict men of sin, righteousness and judgment. This is simply done through a presentation of the gospel. No tricks, gimmicks, entertainment, or strategic moves are necessary for men to be saved. Robinson states, “The Holy Spirit equips the witness to share Jesus Christ with others. Apart from Holy Spirit power, the presentation of the gospel is accompanied by a dreadfulness that kills. It is the Spirit who “makes alive.” The flow of Holy Spirit power through the life of a church and an individual is directly proportional to obedience in witness. Where witnessing is minimized, there is little evidence of the power of the Holy Spirit.”

“…but we have renounced the things hidden because of shame, not walking in craftiness or adulteration the word of God, but by the manifestation of truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God… And even if our gospel is veiled it is veiled to those who are perishing…” (2 Corinthians 4:2-3)

The idea conveyed by the apostle Paul is the common business practice of dishonestly diluting wine with water. Paul was falsely accused by false teachers of perverting the teachings of Jesus and the Old Testament. Similar warnings must be issued against modern day evangelists about reducing the potency of God’s Word by adding block parties, rock music, food or clothing, and other enticements to lure people to faith in Jesus Christ. Not one of the above mentioned scriptures suggest the use of any ploys to appeal to the lost. The Lord makes it abundantly clear to the evangelist in chapter ten of the book of Romans “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Roman 10:17)

The Heart of the Abortion Debate: Do We Have A Creator Who Rules Or Not?

(My thoughts following the Abortion Debate at the University of Toledo on 4/2/2013)

I’ve never been to an official debate on abortion before but I decided to attend the one held at the UT Law Center this past week. It didn’t go as I had expected.

I rightly figured the pro-choice proponent would argue for the freedom, rights and welfare of pregnant Mother’s, however I didn’t expect the pro-life defender to do the same. It became apparent early in the contest that God and unborn babies were not going to be the primary focus of debate from either side. The debate was very civil and respectful (which is to be expected when you take away the two controversial figures involved in an abortion exchange.) I was taken back that arguments for the long term physical and emotional welfare of the mother as well as the rights and empowerment of women was the main case for the PRO-LIFE proponent! I thought she did a good job of making a case but I don’t believe the war will be won on that battlefield.

I very much appreciated the honesty of the pro-choice proponent. She said that she used to work in abortion clinics and would “mislead” pregnant mothers into believing that they were not really carrying a living person. Having gone thru an abortion herself, she said that every mother knows that they are carrying a living person inside them. She now regrets having been dishonest then. The pro-life proponent quickly seized this opportunity to say that organizations like Planned Parenthood (the nation’s largest abortion provider) are doing exactly the same thing today – misleading women – explaining the reason for the deception is money. Abortion is a billion dollar industry. The pro-choice proponent did not protest these assertions.

It dawned on me that the center of the debate used to be about whether or not unborn fetuses were living persons. Advances in science and technology have forced the pro-choice movement to now focus on speculating about the future of unwanted birthed babies, but more importantly the mother’s future quality of life. This was the debate last Tues. in a nutshell. Both sides did a decent job arguing for and against, but should the welfare of the mother have really been the heart of the debate for the pro-life side? I’m not saying that pro-lifers shouldn’t defend against the rhetoric propagated by the other side that we are against and do not care about women, most particularly expecting unwed mothers. This lie was well defended in the debate and is easily proven in the real world by example after example. One example is all of the pro-life pregnancy clinics and other charitable organizations across the nation, including NW Ohio, that help pregnant women before, during and after pregnancy at no cost. Having said that, the pro-life position should be defended the same as it always has, otherwise the body count of 55 million since Roe vs. Wade will continue to grow.

The fight should be to contend that we have a God Who has determined human life, created human life in His image, defined human life and distinguished it above any other form of life. Because He has determined and formed life in the womb (Psalm 139:13,14), He gets to choose what happens to it. God has very clearly outlawed murdering innocent human life. God didn’t even come up in the debate until the Q & A session at the end. During this time, the pro-choice proponent made another stunning admission that I believe is truly the heart of the abortion debate. She said that she understands why those who believe there is a Creator, responsible for creating human life, are pro-life. When I thought about her honest statement, I have to admit that if there were no Creator, no Supreme Authority to be accountable to, then I would agree that abortion is permissible. In fact, if God doesn’t exist there wouldn’t be any reason not to kill all kinds of unwanted people, people groups or those who can’t take care of themselves (elderly, sick, handicapped, mentally challenged, etc.). Everyone would be free to make all kinds of decisions to suit themselves which would ultimately lead to survival of the fittest.Science, statistics, studies and logic that support protecting babies are necessary but are not winning the war. The abortion debate ultimately comes down to whether or not the Bible is true. Do we have a Creator God Who rules or don’t we? Is Evolution true or is Genesis true? People believe abortion is OK because they don’t believe in the God of the Bible. If they did they would understand the importance of submitting to His authority. The pro-life movement’s only chance is by winning the hearts of men with the truth about God.

“Now is the time for God’s people to do the hard work of biblical apologetics, embracing the full message of the Bible, beginning in Genesis, in order to rightly defend the Scriptures and compassionately persuade men, that some might be saved.” -Jason Lisle Ph.D
